I stumbled upon Alice Rosati's photography a few days back. I think her work is so magnificent. She has got one heck of an eye for angles and vibe. It's all very 70's and vintage inspired, which of course, I love. Don't know who the stylist is, but I want them to come do mad, crazy things with my wardrobe.

But my, how the have tables turned! Last week I followed through with an urge to wander into a Goodwill, in which the thrift gods led me to this $7 treasure. Who can deny a fabulous chunky heel these days? Not me, so I was thoroughly pleased when there was a little surprise in my inbox this morning from Dolce Vita introducing the $88 Jezabel. There's no guarantee that the slingback strap would prevent me from tripping over my own feet when there's 5 inches of stacked heel strapped to them, but I love the addition nonetheless. And the studs are a sexy little embellishment against the natural leather.

I was mainly attracted to the Gestuz summer 2010 lookbook because it's full of my curent favorite: harem style pants with the pant legs tapered at the ankle. Ah, the joys of a baggy crotch! Aside from literally rolling out of bed and onto the streets, I don't think style gets any more comfortable than this. The jumpsuit might be borderline head-to-toe jailbait, but nonetheless, it's hot with the faded wash and plunging neckline. I'd love to style it with my cascading chain necklace, an oversized knit, and a solid pair of JC wedges.

The past couple of days have turned into a bit of a cheap shoe binge. It started in the Seattle H&M, which I found thoroughly disappointing in the shoe department. I went in with sky high expectations of their latest line, but these were the only wedges I could find. However, simple but sweet. Next was Value Village, where I purchased these awesome boots by Zodiac for $22. A little pricey considering these boots turn my socks yellow and are definitely not made for walkin', but the rustic, red dirt color had me at hello. They fit perfectly around my little chicken legs, so finally I have a pair of boots that I can wear with a dress or shorts. And the last but not least on my hit-list: Forever 21. Clothing is usually the main event of my F21 purchases, but upon entering, I immediately bolted towards these peep-toe lace-up oxfords. I had just finished with a self-pity party which resulted from seeing Krimly's (from My Cherry Gum) very similar Zara lace-up peep-toes. (There isn't a Zara in the Northwest, so it's pure torture when I see their perfect little pieces flaunted across other blogs.) Anyways, I deemed the coincidence as fate, and one shoe led me to the next. My inspiration levels have been fairly low lately, so I would love to hear how you would wear your favorite pair.

While I am a neutral fan of the maxi dress and the direction the trend has been taking since last season in terms of prints, shape, and styling, I've grown very partial to the jumpsuit as a replacement. This partiality was initially sparked upon seeing Catherine McNeil flaunting a white top with harem pants, giving the illusion of a chic onesie, in the H&M summer 2010 magazine. I pictured the ensemble glamorously easing from poolside to nightclub in the utmost chic fashion, and experienced something similar to a lightbulb moment. There's something about the flowing pant-legs that is very independent but still feminine. I have difficulty with the sack-like appearance I take on in maxi's, and the awkward cut-off that often occurs around my ankles, so the amount of shape that is created in a jumpsuit is thoroughly pleasing to me. Adding a pair of heels easily lends you a long and lean look. And being able to be dressed in comfort and chic in 5 minutes or less is just impressive. The combination of this girls soft, quiet pale face and her fiercely red hair is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. If I wasn't so tainted from my previous experiences dyeing my hair red and so nervous to try it again, I would be at the grocery store buying a box of Feria right this second. A shawl is appealing to me as very cozy and perfect right now, as it doesn't look like summer weather will be hitting the Northwest for at least another month, and is far more sunshine-friendly than a jacket. I have a big crush on this suede scarf from Eudaimonia, as it is plenty wide to drape wonderfully over shoulders. And who can deny some amazing fringe?

These shoes are just ridiculous, and in the best way possible. The futuristic geometry and architecture is spectacular, intense, and not to mention intimidating. The over-the-knee boots (not pictured below- I saved my blogspace for my top five faves) are totally channeling a sexy Catwoman-Stormtrooper hybrid love child conceived in a galaxy far, far away. You probably know this trio better as Tom Petty, Kings of Leon, and Dave Matthews. My friend and I have made an unofficial vow to get our rock on at these three separate concerts when they hit the Gorge this summer. While the Northwest outdoor music scene isn't exactly known for being a showcase for personal style, make no mistake, I will not water down my fashionista alter-ego to blend in with the t-shirt and flip-flop crowd (not hating- Lord knows I've spent my fair share of time looking sloppy in a tee and flops). Tom will be here in 24 days (not that I'm counting), and in true Haute Mess fashion, I've already begun channeling my excitement into determining and planning my concert wear. Yes, already. I have fond memories of the music, air, and nutty people at the Gorge concerts that I can't wait to bring back. For example: a few years ago at a Dave concert, a group of banshee-like hoodlums convinced me to "ghost ride my whip" up and down the rows of tents while they danced on the top of my car. It was all fun and games, until I got seriously scolded by a patrolman, at which time all the banshees miraculously disappeared and left my littleness to fend for myself under his rage. Bring on the craziness, Universe!

Last week I went to my closet in search of something to make a cheerful statement against the gray skies, and I was deeply unsatisfied in my realization that my wardrobe is dominated by blacks, whites, and neutral pastels. Since then, I've decided to be determined to color my closet with a little more vibrance... And then fate brought me to the Lindsay jumper from Karen Zambos. I'm completely smitten with this slinky little number! The color is an absolutely smashing and energetic silky bubblegum-blue (guaranteed to be a mood-booster), and the billowing sleeves and crisp material give it an airy weight, perfect for keeping cool under the sunshine. And perfect for helping me break out of my monotonous rut. The open back adds a touch of seduction, and who can deny the miraculous effects of a cinched waist? I'm dyeing to pair it with this clutch from Rebecca Minkoff (to keep the color alive), layered necklaces, and chunky heels (as always).

I think it's safe to say that this collections lookbook is the exact visual definition of what I've been picturing this summer for both clothing style and life style: chill. Everything about it is so refreshing! What we've got here is four vivacious beach bums invading the SoCal coast in fedoras and ball caps in the utmost laid back, carefree, and loose fashion. I totally dig it. Italian model/actress Elisa Sednaoui was completely off my radar until a few days ago when I spotted her on Moodboard. I found her presence both on and off camera totally captivating, and to be unlike most models, so I just had to share! Her brows and bone structure lend to a somewhat masculine appearance, but all the while, she is beyond beautiful. I love the vision she creates in front of the lense. Her timeless beauty, like that of Francoise Hardy or Rachel Weisz, exudes a refined elegance and poise, with an intriguing undercut of seduction, whim, and strength. And the icing? She's a natural brunette, and keeps it that way, so of course I'm partial.

I thought her photos from this editorial in April '10's Vanity Fair Italy were particularly fantastic.

Not to mention her closet is one I would raid immediately at the call of an opportunity. She keeps it sweet and simple, but still enviously chic with a vintage quality. Can't wait to see more of her!

What I love about this collection: the color palettes, the sheer fabrics, the incorporation of body jewelry, the pastel blue toes, and the setting! How fabulous it would be, sipping tea and nibbling on biscotti's in an open cafe near the beaches of Saint Tropez, watching the beautiful Chanel creations stroll by at the cast of sunset... Sigh. There's a lot of refined detailing in this collection, but it's not over-complicated, so it all appears with ease. The glamour is natural and relaxed, not at all stuffy and pretentious.

What I hate about this collection: the tweed (not pictured below for obvious reasons). Ugh. It gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Le Sac dress, American Apparel - $38

I have searched high and low for this dang dress for close to a year. Many Nordstrom employees have been grilled (I probably owe some apologies to the girls at TBD), many catalogues rifled through, and many hours spent browsing countless websites, my heart jumping each time I thought I had spotted a similarity. But none ever fit the bill. My relationship with it's memory felt like one with a long lost love: kicking myself for letting it get away from me in the first place (I was too shy to make conversation with the leggy blonde wearing it who towered a good 6 inches over me. such a dummy), reminiscing about it ever since, and really bummed that it seemed inevitable that I would never get a chance to see it again. And what do you know, it's been sitting cheekily and perfectly attainable on American Apparel's website this whole time, in all 19 color combinations, right under my nose for a measly $38. From an outsiders point of few, it probably doesn't look like anything to write home about (might I say, the AA site doesn't do it justice). But there's something about all that strappy-ness, it's versatile wearing combinations, and it's drapey goddess-like silhouette that had me at hello. I will be purchasing it in multiple colors, along with this blessed little romper that led me to it's discovery, this weekend. Thank you, o' great gods of fashion fate.

H&M Summer magazine

H&M just released their summer magazine, and so far I've spotted quite a few goodies that will hardly put a dent in my pocket. Usually I find H&M's styling to be below par and yawn-inspiring, but with this issue I've enjoyed a good 75% (up 25% from spring's mag) of their ensembles. On the other hand, the quality and concept of the editorials are fresh and nearly flawless as always. Here are some of my favorites from each spread.

POOL STYLE: features model Catherine McNeill donning quite a bit of (faux) gold bling, ethnic chic, and channels 1960's Cuban nightlife glamor.

I love the billowing sleeves and detailing on this tunic ($35). A mixture of wooden and gold bangles are a great boho/classy-hybrid addition.

(right) L-O-V-E this necklace, especially featured as a back-piece. And for $15 it's a steal!

PRINTS! (right) Necklace seen above.

(right) Great head-to-toe white ensemble. Perfect for going from poolside to nightclub. Trousers are only $15 (!!!), shoes are $50 and fabulously strappy (I like).

STREET LIFE: styling featuring prints and denim, inspired by your local bicycle-riding teenage hoodlum.

(top right) At first I thought the outfit on the right had suspenders involved and I was totally digging it. I was wrong, it's a backpack. Still love the off-the-shoulder crop with high-waisted leggings though.

THE BEACH: a decent attempt at everyone's favorite: the modern hippie-inspired trend of boho-chic. But with a little more straw involved.

I am foreseeing a great friendship with that hat as it keeps the sun from scalding my scalp and earns me many fished-for compliments. That hat is only $8. That hat will soon be mine.

(right) I'm inspired to buy this oversized denim shirt ($20) for a bikini cover-up, and to pair it with chunky nude pumps for a lazy ensemble that I can mosey around town in. (Or maybe I'll stick to the beach, in order to avoid the guaranteed "OMG where are her pants?!?" glares)

This shade of coral totally makes me melt! I wish I could see more of the dress on the left ($35), I'm intrigued by the cross-over shape. The sun hat ($10) on the right is just too charming.

If you know me personally, you are most likely well aware of the soft spot I have for the personality of gay men. Being perfectly straight myself, I am always in awe of their talent for theatrical, witty sarcasm and sassy vulgarity. (Yes, I realize that is a heavy generalization, but it's a generalization for a reason, right?) Having worked for a gay man, befriended a gay man, and accidentally crushed on a gay man myself, I would say that they are by far the more entertaining orientation. The only downside to having a gay in your entourage is that there is a very high probability that they will look, dress, and charm better than you. Having come to terms with this, today I was thrilled when I came across The Starving Stylist. I like a blog with a little bit of verbal substance, and this one, having plenty, I found absolutely tickling. A must-read for a good laugh-out-loud, surely to help you tap into your inner diva. After a series of ridiculously late nights spent online shopping/facebooking/blogging/who-knows-what-ing, and beautiful sunshine-filled mornings slept through, I vowed that I would go to bed at a decent hour tonight, and had planned for 11pm. But somewhere around that time I got sucked into the blogosphere after seeing an idea I wanted to duplicate from Fashion Bananas, and all bets were off on a practical bedtime. So, after loading up on a midnight snack of saltine crackers and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, I creeped through the archives of some of my favorite blogs in search of a handful of great outfits to share. Two hours and three return trips to the kitchen for replenishment later, here's what I've settled on.

I had my mind on one thing and one thing only when I saw this outfit post on The Alteration: THOSE. SHOES. So unique. I couldn't tell you a thing about what the rest of her outfit looks like (which I suppose defeats the purpose of this post's intention) because I was too busy lusting after those bubblegum booties.

It can be tough mastering an outfit with over-the-knee socks without lending to the look of a school girl hooker, and of course, if anyone can master a style, it's Rumi from Fashion Toast. Paired with those silky Alexander Wang draped boxer shorts and an oversized vintage sweater that looks cozier than all get-out, it was instant love.

I've never actually been to Behind the Seams, but after seeing this ensemble on another blog, it's definitely made my to-stalk list. This outfit has four things I love: #1 denim shorts. #2 Nude open-toe booties- so fresh and so sassy! I'm a sucker for all things sparkly (#3) and off-shoulder (#4), and that top would be so much fun to flaunt on a night out.

Picking just one outfit that I adore from Emily's Cupcakes and Cashmere was painful and nearly impossible. She's one of my major sources of style inspiration, so I came very close to dedicating this post solely to the glorification of her fresh and very personal style. Not wanting to publicly expose my obsession, I finally decided upon the outfit above (in close running with this, this, this, this and this). Why? I see a lot of my own style in it's relaxed-and-casual-but-still-chic-ness, and wore something similar last week (minus the gigantic elephant head necklace- that would need to undergo substitution in my book). I can't get enough of that lace top, there are so many ways I want to style it.

When it came to selecting an outfit from Late Afternoon, it literally was impossible. I did manage to settle on the two above, however. I really admire Liz's style- I don't think there's an outfit of hers I haven't saved to my 'inspiration' folder- and I'm working up the guts to take more bold chances with my wardrobe like she does. I selected the first outfit because, if you haven't already read, I have a soft spot for high-waisted and cropped items paired together, and this is a great, and unique, example of why. The second because it's simple yet so sassy-chic, and I love the harmonious mix of rocker-leather and a sweet-heart, off-shoulder pink drape top. The blazer adds a tasteful touch of conservative.

I just came across these adorable lace vintage-inspired shorts on Topshop. Usually I spend my summers in the safety of my denim cutoffs, so I'm very excited to find a knit short that I can foresee such a strong future with. I can't get enough of the flirty lace and soft shade of nude. The best part? (Besides the $30 price mark) They're like a cozy, chic pajama short that can be confidently flaunted in public. Their tiny-ness paired with a solid pump or a wedge make the perfect equation for achieving an alluring pin-up leggy height. I'm envisioning a loose and effortlessly romantic top, and a crisp blazer or chunky sweater. Add a subtly bronzed tan, punchy lipstick and nails, and a tangle of chain necklaces... Irresistibly delicate, sassy and chic!

Fashion over function? Since when?

I've never been big on decision making. Or making sacrifices, as I like to get my way. If my way includes two opposing forces, I'll be determined to the death to find a compromise or harmonious mesh. As a result, the motto "fashion over function", or visa versa, rubs me wrong. I can only have one or the other? No thank you! The saying generally pertains to shoes, which are notorious for forcing it's wearer to sacrifice their comfort and stability for a much longed-for fashionable height. This is why I am in complete adoration of, and thankful for, the trend of solid and substantial heels. Although I am a newly converted wedge addict (see post) and will never again utter a harsh word against them, this doesn't just include wedges, opening up a comfy variety for your wardrobe. Heels are growing more chunky and sturdy by the minute. So speed walking, or even running, in them is no longer a death wish. While there are still many material, shape, and color options, wooden heels are really catching my eye. There's a fuse of sleek, high fashion with a natural aesthetic going on that is really pleasing and freshly attractive. Here are some options that I am currently adoring. Happy walking!

Bon International Summer 2010

Autumn's come early in the latest edition of Sweden's Bon International, and even though spring has just sprung, I'm already excited about what's in store for fall! I usually let F21 provide my basic casuals, but lately I'm impressed with their on-the-ball selection of basics and trends. Here are some good lookin' items I'm putting on my wish list. Tips:

- I often find the pieces I get from F21 boring or not so hot when worn alone, so keep your mind open to creating combos. F21 is perfect to mix & match & blend with your designer or higher quality items to create a look that's got your personal touch and creativity.

- Don't buy online (unless necessary). From my experience, sometimes the items look, fit, and feel much different online than in person or as advertised.

- F21 is a gold mine for a variety of accessories and they're as cheap as they come. Take advantage!

Unexpected wedge fetish

My attitude towards wedges has been tainted since their popularity boom in 2006. I've associated them with the "cutesy", and overdone, southern sweetheart look of polka-dots, daisy prints, sandal straps, and ugly rope-wrapped cork heels ever since. But I'm totally fascinated by the revamped comeback they've made! They're all over blogs and fashion icons looking cooler than ever, totally chunked-out, vintage, and solid in completely different materials and cuts. Showing a little bit, or a lot, of leg is definitely in high demand this season, and wedges are a fashionable but still functional way to achieve that vintage pin-up leggy height.

I'm a big sucker for all things sparkly and shiny, kind of like a crow, or a kid with ADD. In my world, sequins or shimmer are always a fun way to sass up any average-joe fabric, or to make a confident but effortless grab for the center of attention. Here are some of my latest cravings!

Alice + Olivia mini dress - $595. I love this dress! Love, love, love! It's beautiful, the silhouette is elegant, and that low scoop back is just plain sexy. I'm not really feeling the shoes that it's styled with though- I'd probably do a nude peep-toe of some sort. This is one of the very few dresses I've come across that is so perfect and complete on it's own that accessorizing would be more likely to hinder than help it. Too bad I don't have $600 to throw down. However, I do have a birthday coming up... Mom, are you reading this?

Salvatore Ferragamo sandals - $1045. Gorgeous. And with a pleasurable hint of hardcore thanks to the studded scale detailing. These just ooze of chic hotness.

3.1 Phillip Lim cropped sequin top - $625. When I first saw this top I couldn't decide if it was totally disgusting or totally hot. I've definitely decided upon the latter, as long as it's not paired with the matching shorts (gross. totally overkill). I'm picturing it with these high-rise waxed skinny jeans, or shirred pants, and black wedges for a posh look. For a more relaxed, day-time look, I'd do a pair of ultra-light, slightly acid-washed jeans.

Victoria's Secret sequin corset bra top - $59. Two weakness with one stone: a top that has sequins and is ultra-cropped. Jackpot! It comes in a grayish-purple and navy too (I want all three). I'm totally intrigued by the pairing and layering possibilities that could happen. I think a vest and some cut up leggings would make for a killer combo, kind of like this.

Shakuhachi denim studded vest - $230. This vest is just too rad. Okay, so it's not exactly sparkly, but it's definitely got some dazzle with those studs. I'm thinkin' this + the sequin corset bra top would be hot!

Most fashion addicts and creative spirits alike have felt the blessing and addictive strength of the virtual styling tool and social networking phenomenon called Polyvore. The inspiration you can find on Polyvore is literally non-stop and the fun that comes from fantasizing that you exist in a virtual world where your closet has no limits is thoroughly fulfilling. I know, I have problems... I'm cheating on the real world with a website. It's come to the point that the pads of my fingers are sore from all that creative dragging and dropping. 1. DIY as much as you can! Find something you like and try to figure out how to be creative and make your own. Brainstorm with fellow fashion-friendly friends. Etsy is a great place to find inspiration. Here are some ideas:
+ Find a tee that's one or two sizes too big for you. Cut the neckline for an off-the-shoulder look. To take it further: dye it and be-jewel it! Do a solid color or some tie dye/stripes. Collect rhinestones, jewels, beads, etc., glue and decorate as you please.
+ Headpieces: find a plain headband or elastic band. Pick out beads, jewels, pearls, feathers, etc. and glue away! (Inspiration: Ban.Do and AdoreVintage)
+ Necklaces: cut a piece of thin cardboard in the shape of a smile (like a bib necklace) that rests nicely on your chest. Attach ribbon and glue decorations onto the cardboard as you desire. (Inspiration: Molly-Hana Designs)

2. MIX designer with vintage with thrift with cheap. Save the big bucks only for those designer must-haves. You can almost always find something similar for a more budget-friendly price. Thrift your heart out for one-of-a-kind pieces and inspiration. Go cheap for basics. Forever 21 is getting more stylish by the moment and carries plenty of designer-wannabe looks. Who's going to tell? Mix it all up for a look that's got a little bit of everything and is 100% your own personal flair.

3. DARE to dazzle! OVER do it! This is not your mothers fashion era of "less is more". This season is all about tastefully piling it on! Take a bold step outside of your comfort bubble and do something different with your style.

Her poncho and kaftan creations are the perfect satisfaction to my current gypsy/boho/tribal-esque craving. Don't be misguided though. There are no pirates involved whatsoever. I confusedly browsed Jen's site for a good 10 minutes searching for something remotely pirate related, and I have come to the conclusion that I am a victim of false advertising. This is what you need to find, and try to find it vintage: something leather (a mini or shorts), something lacy (i.e. a lace bodysuit or turtleneck) or gauze (a black or neutral sheer blouse is perfect, layer a lace bandeau or dark floral corset underneath), and some footwear, like combat boots or oxford pumps, that's got a little wear-and-tear action. Thrift some random, vintage-inspired jewelry. Keep your hair and makeup minimal, natural, and slightly messy. And wallah. You're an alley-way indie sweetheart.

Loeffler Randall 'Honey' Peep Toe Bootie - Nordstrom

I've died and gone to peep toe heaven. Twice. Not joking, I had to do a double take when I came across these pricey little honeys. Everything about this shoe is perfect. I even feel guilty for giving it the lowly and ordinary title of a "shoe". Even better, they look pretty cozy for a 3" heel. But 550 bones? Whew. Maybe in my next life. Now a little part of me is looking forward to my last day on earth when I'll ascend into the sky and become one with these heavenly babies.
